We featured tips on sewing with Chalk Cloth at a recent Sewtopia. This fabric is like having a chalk board anywhere. You can sew through it, design a creative buffet table, create a kids to-go activity fun book or decorate with different holiday ideas.

We used it using the Reversible Two-Fold Table Topper pattern by Janine Babich. Placing fabric on one side and the chalk cloth on the reverse side offered a fun activity table cloth for kids or adults at any party. Then turn it over for a pretty floral print. Chalk cloth projects are great for party games, ice- breakers, food identification, tastings, seating arrangements and interactive games such as tic-tac-toe, hang-man and dot-to-dot.

Chalk Cloth can be washed in cold water and tumble dry low. Chalk washes off very easily with a wet wash cloth, sponge or paper towel.

This versatile chalkboard fabric acts much like a traditional chalkboard. Write on it with chalk, then wipe it off and reuse it. Use it to make calendars, aprons, bulletin boards, book covers, or let your imagination run wild.

Chalk Cloth fiber content: PVC, polyester and cotton. It is sold by the yard and it is 47″ – 48″ wide.

Chalk Cloth Sewing Tips:

  1. A size 80/12 Jeans needle is recommended when sewing with Chalk Cloth.
  2. Use a longer stitch length, such as 3mm or 4mm.
  3. Pins will leave permanent holes in the Chalk Cloth. Plan to use Wonder Clips to hold layers together.
  4. A Walking Foot will help with the feeding of the fabric.
  5. When working with Chalk cloth, leave a larger opening for turning to accommodate the stiffer fabric.
  6. A Teflon shield may be necessary with pressing Chalk Cloth projects. If you don’t have a Teflon shield, use a press cloth and a low iron temperature.
  7. Use a rotary cutter, mat and ruler to cut through single layers of the Chalk Cloth.

Using The Two-Fold Table Topper pattern has easy to sew mitered corners and a defining flange. Select a fun border fabric for each side for a truly reversible options for multiple uses. Because of the size of the mitered border, using larger prints such as the floral print shown, will add extra interest. You could even choice a Spring colored fabric on one side and a Fall print on the other. The options are limitless.
