Sewtopia Sewing Club Recap – Scarves

We Carry

Sewtopia Sewing Club - Scarves1April 2014 – Our Sewtopia Sewing Club theme this month was all different ways to make and wear scarves. With a quick trip to my local fabric store and purchasing cuts of 1 2/3 yards to 2 yards of a variety of fabrics, I was set to experiment with size and edgings. The gal at the store asked if I was making scarves…I was surprised she guessed my intention. She followed up by telling me they get tons of people coming in and asking for that same yardage amount to make their own scarves. Note: the quilt shop cottons that we carry do not have the drape and feel needed for most scarves.

After experimenting with a variety of fabrics and styles, I came to realize I needed much larger sizes and much lighter weight fabric then I had purchased to do some of those fun variations seen on videos posted at the end of this blog post. If you want to make your own scarves, first be sure of how you want to wear your scarf so you know how much fabric to purchase.

The scarf I am wearing in the video is the infinity scarf. With only 2 seams to sew, it is one of the easiest to make.

The purple embroidered scarf with from the Anita Goodesign embroidery collection “Scarf Ends”. Each design is made to be stitched at the end of the fabric. After embroidering, simply turn the edges in at the edge of the embroidery for the finished scarf.

Use a extra wide hemmer foot for your sewing machine to turn the edges on thicker fabric. The grey plaid fabric had some stretch to it so adjusting the presser of the foot was a must. Sewtopia Sewing Club - Scarves6

Here are a few videos on how to use a hemmer foot:

This stretch knit fabric needed no sewing or hemming. This is completely a NO SEW scarf. Since the fabric does not unravel when cut, there was no need to hem the edges. After slicing the ends to create strips of fabric, beads were slid on to each strip. The fabric was thick enough to keep the bead in place without any extra glue or knots.

This scarf was made with T-Shirts. Cut strips from T-Shirts across the body so they still are one full circle. By cutting from different colors of T-Shirts, this scarf is ready for summer fun. Watch our video on 16 Quick T-Shirt Makeovers for more T-Shirt scarf ideas.
