Stitching Cosmos 10/10

November 20

The Stitching Cosmos sewing machine program promotes a different sewing machine presser foot and sewing machine technique throughout the 10-month galaxy tour. Explore a new technique with guided instruction and hands-on practice like machine appliqué, couching, pintucks, circle sewing attachment, ruffler and decorative stitches. There will be three levels of techniques each month – beginner level techniques for those who are just starting out and two additional techniques for those who are slightly more experienced. Learn all three (and sometimes more) techniques at each hands-on class. Make-up days are available for missed class sessions. Open to all brands of sewing machines. Tours are scheduled on the last Wednesday of the month. Limited to 16 students per session. Morning and afternoon sessions always fill up first. Please register early for these sessions to guarantee your desired session time.

Welcome to Stitching Cosmos

We are excited to have had such an overwhelming response to the 2017 Stitching Cosmos 10-month program. If you are felling apprehensive to the commitment you have made, we promise the first month’s lessons will start easy and grow little by little throughout the year.

Though we have put together a supply list for both fabric and featured accessories for the entire year, we want to do everything possible to hold your hand through each step of the Stitching Cosmos program. We do not assume you know these fabulous techniques that is why you signed up in the first place. A basic knowledge of your sewing machine is helpful but if the two of you are stilling getting to know each other, you will be best pals in just a few short months.

For January’s Stitching Cosmos class, Heirloom Creations will be providing ALL fabric and stabilizer.

Please bring ONLY the following items to your first class:

  • Sewing machine, foot control and power cord
  • Sewing table – Sew Steady table or slide on table (optional, but highly recommended)
  • 1/4” foot
  • Open toe foot
  • Small scissors
  • Pins
  • Needles – Microtex 80/12
  • 1 spool of Aurifil thread – grey or cream
  • 3-4 spools of decorative threads – solid or variegated
  • Optional – Cut A Round Tool – we will have Cut A Round tools for you to use at class, but if you already own one, please bring it with you.
  • You can watch Sara’s Video on the Cut A Round tool here:

Note: Each month’s class will need different supplies and different sewing machine accessories. Be sure to check the website each month prior to class to be sure you have the correct supplies.

There will be very little prep prior to class. Just bring the supplies with you for that month’s technique as posted on the website.

A complete Stitching Cosmos class supply list containing yardage suggestions and fabric are further down in this post.

In January’s Stitching Cosmos class you will be learning the following techniques:

  1. How to choose a color palette and fabric types suitable for the Stitching Cosmos project.
  2. Master curved rotary cutting with the Cut A Round ruler and accurate curved piecing.
  3. Learn to keep fabric from puckering with the correct stabilizer.
  4. Understand thread choices to make every decorative stitch and technique pop.
  5. Select needles appropriate for desired threads.
  6. Explore your sewing machine’s decorative stitches with decorative threads.
  7. Start your Decorative Stitch Book as you sample your sewing machine’s stitches.

Homework After January’s Stitching Cosmos Session:
