At the April 2011 Sewtopia Sewing Club we showed many techniques using denim including how to hem jeans without ripping out a single stitch.

1. Why is denim blue?

Indigo dye was very easy to get and very affordable.

2. Could a pair a jeans withstand two horses pulling from both sides of a pair of jeans as pictured in the above Levi Strauss label?

NOPE!

3. Has denim jeans ever gone “out of style”?

Yes, in the 1990’s, denim was not seen on the high-fashion runaways. Teenagers in this era did not want to be seen wearing clothes their parents were wearing.

4. In what decade did some school ban students from wearing denim?

1950’s – James Dean “Rebel without a Cause” spurred bad-boys who wore denim.

5. Why were rivets added to traditional denim jeans?

To secure high wear areas such as pocket corners.

6. Can you name 10 or more different “fits” produced for jeans?

Hip-huggers, bell-bottoms, baggies, elephant ears, ankle jeans, loose jeans, straight jeans, boot cut, skinny jeans, slim fit, overalls, Boy Cut or Boyfriend – women, saggy, carpenter jeans, original jeans, classic, wide leg, jeggings, rises in jeans (the distance from the crotch to the waistband) range from high-waisted to superlow-rise
