Modern Triangles by HoopSisters

Love the look of modern quilting but want to skip all the straight line stitching? Then use your embroidery machine.

I recently saw in person the actual sewn out quilt of the HoopSisters Modern Triangles. With “Modern Quilting” on my brain from a recent Sewtopia Sewing Club, this looked easy to complete.

HoopSisters Modern TrianglesHow hard would it be to embroider all the blocks with the awesome Battilizer from HoopSisters? Sure enough, it did not take long to embroider out all the triangles, sew them together and then bind the quilt. Here is the secret… HoopSisters have developed a special stable batting product called Battilizer. It is both batting and stabilizer in one. This allows the embroiderer to hoop the batting only and float the quilt top fabric and the back fabric on top of and underneath the embroidery hoop. When the block is embroidered, or in this case the triangle, the quilting process is complete. Done. Finished. HoopSister classes are scheduled multiple times each month at Heirloom Creations for you to work on any one of the HoopSister quilts. Check out the online list of classes for current dates and class times. First, I started by combining more than one triangle in a large embroidery hoop. You can do this on the embroidery machine or with embroidery software. Be sure to leave at least 1″ between each of the triangle pieces. modern sewtopia 9 When it stitches out it will look like this. HoopSisters Modern Triangles 10 Triangles are then trimmed using the special ruler called Trimmer by George 2.0. This fancy ruler is the key to trimming away the extra back fabric and Battilizer and leaving the front fabric untrimmed. Align the cut edges and stitch the triangles together. HoopSisters Modern Triangles 12 Here is HoopSisters showing how the special Trimmer by George 2.0 ruler works.

Once the quilt is assembled you are almost done. Both of these embroidery CD collections are available on our online and in store. To secure use clear thread and sew all the folds in place. Refer back to preview pictures to see where the straight lines from this step actually show as another element of the modern quilting look on the front of the quilt. HoopSisters Goosetracks 1 Goosetracks is originally a block of the month quilt HoopSisters introduced a few years back. Now available as a CD on our website, these blocks can be embroidered in multiple sizes depending on your maximum hoop size. This quilt uses the Battilizer and a slightly different method of completion on the back size. HoopSisters Goosetracks 2 These amazing close up pictures will give you an idea of how beautifully digitized each block is and how the love of thread, piecing and quilting can come together one block at a time with an embroidery machine.   HoopSisters Goosetracks 3 HoopSisters Goosetracks 4 HoopSisters Goosetracks 5 HoopSisters Goosetracks 6 This picture shows how the back of the Goosetrack will look once completed. All seams are hidden under a strip of fabric stitched in place with clear thread. As you will notice (or not notice), this final row of stitching is near invisible on the front of the quilt! HoopSisters Goosetracks 7 HoopSisters Goosetracks 8 Thank you HoopSisters for the use of your quilts in our video and blog post. We are grateful for your generosity. We can’t wait to see the coming year’s Block of the Month.
