by Sara Snuggerud in Events

We have been making Sara’s famous Charity Gift Bags for local places in need in Sioux Falls for 16 years. In that time frame, we have sewn and filled over 20,000 bags with travel sized soaps and shampoos and other toiletry items. We have come to the difficult decision to end the Charity Gift Bag program to be able to transition into bigger and better things for the future.

On Saturday, October 27, 2018 we will have our final Charity Gift Bag stuffing party at Heirloom Creations.

Let’s Go Out With a Bang!

Sara has ordered in tons of zippers to pair with donated fabric from Montgomery’s Furniture. All fabric is pre-cut into the 10″ x 16″ size. If you would like to help sew bags for this FINAL year, stop by and pick up a bundle. These bundles are wrapped with 10 pieces of upholstery fabric and 10 zippers. All sewn bags need to be delivered back to Heirloom Creations by October 26, 2018 so they can be filled.

This video shows how to make the Charity Gift Bags with either a serger (FASTEST WAY) or a sewing machine.

Here is the original Bernina “Face Case” pattern that helped get this started over 16 years ago.

Speaking of filling…donations of travel size soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, deodorant, tooth brushes, toothpaste and make-up are also needed. If you are traveling this summer take a few minutes to save up and bring home those much needed personal hygiene items to fill the zippered bags.

If you have any connections with local dentists or hotels, let them know their donations will be greatly appreciated this Fall.

We hope to have the LARGEST stuffing party ever!

Join us Saturday, October 27, 2018 for the final Charity Gift Bag stuffing party. Starting at 10am, it usually takes volunteers about 1 1/2 – 2 hours to fill all the zippered bags with collected hygiene items. This is a very kid-friendly volunteer opportunity if you would like to share your love for volunteering with a youngster. Plus we will have drinks and snacks to keep them going full speed.

After October 2018, we still will accept donations of sewn zippered bags and travel sized toiletries. These items will be delivered directly to Children’s Inn or the Bishop Dudley House for them to distribute.

We greatly encourage you to continue to make these famous zippered bags and fill them yourselves. Towns across America all have homeless shelters, halfway houses and safe houses for abused women. We hope you will continue to collect soap and shampoo and make your own version of these zippered bags.

If want to purchase your own zippers, we have found great zipper sources on Ebay by searching with the following criteria: “Bulk 14″ zippers”

We want to thank everyone who has helped sew and fill over 20,000 zipper bags over the last 16 years.
