Twisty Twirly Cuddle Scarf

We Carry
by Sara Snuggerud in Sewing Tips

Introducing the 3rd version of Cuddle scarves… we now have the Twisty Twirly Scarf. Using elastic that is stretched is the key to making the Cuddle fabric spiral down around you.

These scarves are cut on the lengthwise grain of the fabric. Being that you are needing a Cuddle fabric strip that is 15” x 84” you are needing 2 1/3 yards of fabric. If you are buying yardage you will get four scarves from the purchased yardage. If you purchase the individual kits, you will get just one scarf in the desired color. Kits include: fabric, elastic and pattern needed to complete the entire scarf.

Currently there are five scarf kits available from Shannon fabrics. They include; black, brown and gold, frosted zebra (Chinchilla), snow leopard, and black and white houndstooth.

Machine Set Up
Set the sewing machine to a zigzag stitch or a multiple point zigzag stitch. Lengthen the stitch length to 2mm or 3mm based on how it looks once the elastic is sewn. It should have a “running stitch” look when stitched. Avoid having too many stitches piled close together.

Insert a stretch needle to prevent skipped stitches while sewing through the elastic. Stretch needles have a special coating on the needle to help them stitch through rubber type materials. See our video on stretch needles to learn why this is one of Sara’s favorite 9-1-1 emergency needles to always have on hand at all times.

Using a walking foot will help when stitching on the stretchy Cuddle fabrics. After securing the elastic with a few stitches at the beginning, use two hands, one in the back and one in the front, to stretch the elastic along the marked fabric line. The pattern will guide you for marking and pinning the elastic into position for the optimum stretch for desired scarf length.

Elastic quality does vary from brand to brand. Be sure to test the 1/4″ elastic you select for putting in your own scarves. The amount of finished twirl can vary between different weights of elastic.

At Heirloom Creations you may find additional Twisty Twirly Cuddle scarf kits in other colors such as pink and black and white fur.

Note from Sara ~ After I sewed a couple of these scarves, I was able to complete one in as little as 15 minutes! Though the pattern has you stitch the opening closed by hand, we always sew the opening closed by machine. Since the stitching is hidden in the nap of the fur it is near invisible when completed.

Try out this new scarf for a great new twist. If you have made scarves before for friends and family, who could say no to a new luxurious style out of the gorgeous Cuddle fabrics they already love to wear.

Here are the links to our previous Cuddle Scarf videos. The original Cuddle Scarf only took two seams to sew. The second Double Cuddle Scarf only took three seams to sew. The Twisty Twirly scarf is sure to make it to the top of the Cuddle scarf favorite list.
