Word Art in the Sewing World

We Carry
by Sara Snuggerud in Sewing Tips

Word art is everywhere.

Sewing and words go hand and hand. We see favorite quotes and funny memes in our daily Facebook feeds and don’t even get me started on word quotes on Pinterest. Your favorite coffee mug, the mug rug It sits on, the kitchen towel on the oven door bar, to the cut-out words we now glue to our walls, word art is everywhere.

These clever short sentences easily state who we are and how we feel.

From wine lovers to coffee drinkers. From being proud of the US State you live in to the longitude and latitude of your favorite city, word art is everywhere.

At our recent Designs in Machine Embroidery (DIME) event we learned tricks to make lettering stand out on any weight of fabric using thin to thick thread choices. For very small lettering select a bobbin weight thread such as 60wt for each letter to be easily read. Also select a smaller needle like a Microtext size 60/8 or 70/10.

We also got a sneak peek into the world of Vintage embroidery which is so trendy for guys and in high end retail clothing stores like Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister Co. and Forever 21.

If you own an embroidery machine and do not yet own embroidery software take some time to come in and see the possibilities. If lettering and basic combining of designs together if all you are after there are many low cost options to get you started.

Bernina has software that you can even download a 30 day free-trial version to see what it can do.

We even have classes on how to download, install and use the Quick Font on a laptop. Look for our “Quick Font” classes online or in our newsletter.

Word art is playful shapes like the dog silhouette shown below brings all new customizable elements to the embroidery world.
