What Type of Holiday Sewer are You?

We Carry
by Sara Snuggerud in Projects

Since Christmas last year, each sewer has murmured something about starting earlier. Did you change your habits this year and start holiday sewing earlier or are you one to want to keep with tradition?

To help you identify which holiday sewer you might be, we have created a handy guide.

January Planner – As soon as Christmas is over, a new list is started. Each sewing project is carefully scheduled to allow plenty of time for completion and, if needed, having it professionally quilted and bound before the holiday deadline.

April Sewer – As soon as the first bolts of Christmas fabric arrives at Heirloom Creations, they know they need to be first in to get the best selection. They usually purchase entire bolts of the best border prints and panels before they are gone. (Yes, this is true…we see the first Christmas collections arrive in April – thank you Nancy Halvorsen).

Shop Hopper – Shop hoppers buy lots throughout the year, some without any plan at all, with hopes of getting everything done by December 24. Projects may not be identified as holiday gifts until all loot has been accumulated and the first snow falls. Then this sewer reaches in to the closet full of projects just waiting to be started and starts sewing.

Summertime Sewer – These sewers often pop in during the dog-days of summer showing off finished red and green projects. Though totally out of season, they are the envy of the other customers in the store.

Scattershot Sewer – Starting projects is this sewer’s favorite! (Key word: STARTING) Though deadlines loom, there is always a new project that would be so much MORE fun to start then to finish the numerous others already in progress. Take one more class…start another project. Though many will wonder how she ever gets it all done – she does!

September Sewer – As soon as those kids get back in school, this sewer heads to the fabric store to see what the Fall sewing will be. Since they haven’t stepped inside a fabric store all summer, their eyes dance across the wide variety of fresh projects for the current holiday season.

Miss November – This sewer takes her chances of what fabrics will still be available in November. With fabric collections often being picked over, they are left to be extra creative to make projects work based on the amount of fabric left on the bolt. Once again, this sewer creates one-of-a-kind adaptations to the original patterns.

Travel Binder – these gals are often seen in the passenger seat sewing the binding on while on the way to the recipient’s house. The prepared (empty) gift bag is waiting in the trunk to be stuffed with said project. Sewer arrives with finished project and small bits of threads on their holiday outfit.

Christmas Eve Sewer – Santa has his elves, but this sewer knows how to burn the midnight oil. (Love you mom!). 🙂

Hero Sewer – This sewer can work on holiday gifts, mend a few jeans, hem a friends concert skirt, make 12 more aprons for a customer who decided to now give one to EVERY person on her holiday list, sew all the animal costumes for the church’s nativity program, help out with all children’s holiday parties, make dozens of cookies, sew matching PJ’s for Christmas morning for the entire family to wear, decorate the house and host both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals while providing sleeping accommodations for the entire out-of-town family clan.

Screw-It Sewer – this gal decides that they never stated WHICH Christmas you would be receiving this sewn gift. They lovingly wrap the unfinished quilt top, one block or a simple snap-shot of the selected fabric. They then pour themselves a cup of eggnog or glass of wine and sit down to enjoy the company of visiting loved ones.
